About Our Mission

Housing Advocacy is a non-profit initiative dedicated to preserving community ownership of residential properties and preventing the corporate takeover of our neighborhoods.

The Problem

Since the 2008 financial crisis, private equity firms and large corporate investors have been purchasing single-family homes at an unprecedented rate. These investors often convert owner-occupied homes into rental properties, driving up housing costs, reducing homeownership opportunities, and fundamentally changing the character of residential neighborhoods.

Our Approach

We monitor real estate listings to identify newly listed properties and reach out to sellers with information about:

  • The impact of selling to corporate buyers vs. individual homeowners
  • How to identify offers from private equity firms (often disguised as LLCs)
  • Alternative selling options that benefit both sellers and communities
  • Resources for homeowners facing financial pressure to sell

Our Team

Our team consists of housing advocates, real estate professionals, data scientists, and community organizers who are passionate about preserving affordable homeownership opportunities and the character of residential neighborhoods.

How We're Funded

Housing Advocacy is funded through grants and donations from individuals, foundations, and community organizations committed to housing justice and equitable communities. We accept no funding from real estate interests or corporate entities.
